she brings me a piece
of sun-bleached white paper-
she wants to show me
what she’s drawn at school today
I see a dog, with wings
happy and outside
clear as day
in its left hand
the dog is holding a wand
with a heart at its center
to the left of the purple winged dog
there is a thought bubble
or a window
or maybe it’s just a mirror
‘U-O-Y E- V- O-L E- W’
WE LOVE YOU is written
in perfect blocked print
each letter placed brilliantly
and orderly; inverted
I stare at it a minute
and then at her
my precious, forever girl
I close my eyes and know
with that deep place inside myself
that knows
there is so much more to life
then what our eyes can see
our people are never lost
are always with us
are always writing to us
with both hands
from both sides-
they send us postcards
and love stamps
they send us children
and mirrors

author’s note
further inspiration and the line “with both hands” from Franz Wright gorgeous poem “PS” which was shared with me via a gorgeous weekly writing circle I attend lead by Liza Patrick xo, S.
